What Do I Wear to a Photo Session?

What I generally recommend for all clients I’m about to capture is to wear neutrals (greens, browns, cream, khaki, etc.) or soft pastel colors. It’s not entirely necessary but it definitely compliments colors in nature, bringing the focus primarily on the subject.

Clothing should not be form fitting and shouldn’t be too “busy.” Subtle floral patterns can sometimes be nice but it’s best to avoid other patterns like polka dots, pinstripes, and color blocks. Men should avoid t-shirts and choose collared shirts (Henley shirts work if they're the stubborn type).

Say NO to smart watches, colorful and bold accessories, vivid attire, pocketed cargo pants/shorts, “trendy” shoes, and fashion logos.

Some Extra Considerations

Before hitting the road to our location site be sure clothing is ironed and lint rolled.

Also, PLEASE don’t forget to check pockets for phones at the start of your session!

Pro Tip

Because sometimes getting ready can be hectic, picking and planning the night before is your best bet. The right preparation can make or break a gallery.

What began as a passion project as an educator on sabbatical has evolved into something more. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far with Melissa Paul Photo Co. and even more excited for what’s ahead as this business continues to grow. I want you to see the best version of yourself in your gallery that isn’t distracted by less than cohesive wardrobe choices.

Over the years I certainly have developed an eye for what works for galleries. What you wear to photo sessions truly is that important. I always feel a little awkward making this request but I promise it will make your photos shine!
